Péter Varga is a Hungarian geophysicist born in 1942, affiliated with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. He leads the Seismology Department at the GGRI in Sopron. His research focuses on Earth's inner structure, regional seismicity, stress states, geodynamics, including Earth's rotation and tides, as well as the history of science. After studying at Moscow State University, he worked at the Eötvös Loránd Institute and became the GGRI director around 1990, later serving as the secretary-general of the geoscience section of the Central European Initiative.
