He has made significant contributions to the study of metallic and semiconducting materials, authoring influential books on electron microscopy. Goodhew led the UK SuperSTEM project for a decade and served as Dean of Engineering and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool. He initiated the MATTER project and was the founding Director of the UK Centre for Materials Education. In 2017, he was honored as Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services to Engineering and Education.
