Peter Kittilsby 'Pete' Schoening (July 30, 1927 – September 22, 2004) was an American mountaineer renowned for his extraordinary heroism during the 1953 attempt to summit K2. He became one of the first two climbers to successfully ascend the 8,000-meter peak Gasherbrum I in 1958. In 1966, he was also part of the team that made the first ascent of the highest mountain in Antarctica, Vinson Massif.
