Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos is a Brazilian virologist, researcher, and university professor born on April 16, 1957, in Monte Alegre, Brazil. He is a fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the Evandro Chagas Institute, where he was also the director from 2014 to 2019. Notably, he contributed to over 100 virus discoveries and played a crucial role during the Zika virus epidemic from 2015 to 2016, being the first to isolate the virus linked to cases of microcephaly. He served as president of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine from 2019 to 2021.
