Paul Kelpe was a German-born American abstract painter, born on January 15, 1902. He is known for integrating found objects into paintings, making him one of the first American artists to do so. Kelpe created two of the five Williamsburg murals, recognized as the first abstract murals in the United States. Beyond his notable mural contributions for government projects, he was an independent innovator in the art scene and a university educator, significantly influencing American abstract art during a challenging period for such styles.
