Paul Josef Crutzen is a Dutch chemist and atmospheric scientist born on December 3, 1933, in Amsterdam. He earned a Ph.D. in meteorology from Stockholm University where he also taught. In 1970, he published significant research on the ability of nitrogen oxides to deplete ozone. Between 1974 and 1980, he conducted research at various institutes in Boulder, Colorado. In 1980, he joined the Max Planck Institute in Mainz, Germany, overseeing the atmospheric chemistry department until 2000. Crutzen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 for his contributions to atmospheric chemistry.
