Patricia S. Cowings (born 1948) is an African American space physiologist and the first African American woman trained by NASA to become an astronaut. Although she was a backup for a space flight in 1979, she did not travel to space. Cowings is renowned for her research in space physiology and for developing treatments for motion sickness in astronauts, contributing valuable knowledge about astronaut health in outer space.
