Patriarch Alexius II, born Aleksei Michailowitsj Ridiger on February 23, 1929, in Tallinn, Estonia, served as the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia from June 10, 1990, until his passing on December 5, 2008. He succeeded Patriarch Pimen and oversaw significant growth in the Russian Orthodox Church following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Alexius II held various ecclesiastical positions throughout his life, becoming a priest in 1950 and a metropolitan by 1968. He faced health issues late in life, dying at the age of 79 and was succeeded by Patriarch Kirill.
