Born Patricia Mary Shiels in 1931 in County Galway, she was raised by her sister after the death of their mother. O'Shea worked as a bookseller in Manchester and became involved in theater before turning to writing. Her works interweave childhood memories with Irish folklore. Despite initial acclaim, she published only a few more stories after her debut, including 'Finn Mac Cool and the Small Men of Deeds' and 'The Magic Bottle'.
