He held various ambassadorial posts, including in Oslo, Reykjavík, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. He served as the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry from 1950 to 1953 and retired in 1970. Tarjanne was married to Anna-Kertun, with whom he had a daughter and three sons, one of whom, Pekka Tarjanne, became a well-known politician and scientist.
