Özlem Türeci is a German physician of Turkish descent, an immunologist, and a businesswoman. She is the co-founder and chief medical officer of BioNTech, as well as the president of the Cancer Immunotherapy Association and a lecturer at the University of Mainz. Türeci is a pioneer in cancer immunotherapy. In 2001, she founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals and became its CEO in 2008. Ganymed was later acquired by Astellas in 2016. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, she focused on developing a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 in partnership with Pfizer, achieving over 90% efficacy.
