He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Adolf Schinnerer and Julian Diez. Until 1944, he lived in Munich, where he painted several churches and public buildings, often using the technique of 'kasein'. He was married to Margarete Pöppel, who also pursued a career in the crafts. Pöppel was based in Kronburg, Upper Swabia near Memmingen.
