Ōtani Chōken, born on March 27, 1930, is a Japanese Buddhist monk known for his role in the Jōdo Shinshū sect. He holds the name Gengyo and serves as the 25th head priest of the Higashi Hongan-ji, a significant sect within Jōdo Shinshū. Chōken has also held positions of leadership, including president of the All Japan Buddhist Federation. Notably, he is a cousin of Emperor emeritus Akihito, adding to his prominence. He comes from a family of Buddhist clerics, with his siblings also involved in the religious community.
