Onni Palaste, originally named Onni Bovellan, was a Finnish veteran of the Winter War and a writer born on 27 December 1917 in Kiuruvesi, Finland. He served in Colonel Hjalmar Siilasvuo's troops, leading numerous successful patrols, and was awarded the Iron Cross for his bravery. After the war, he changed his surname to Palaste and became the director of the Vuokatti sports academy. He began writing in 1967, creating approximately twenty novels about the Winter War and a mini-series about the 17th-18th century. He passed away on 1 July 2009.
