Oliver Smithies was a British-American geneticist and biochemist, renowned for his contributions to genetic research. He introduced starch as a medium for gel electrophoresis in 1955 and discovered the method of homologous recombination for genetically modified DNA in collaboration with Mario Capecchi and Martin Evans. This technique significantly advanced the reliability of altering animal genomes and led to the development of gene targeting and genetically modified mice. Smithies was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2007 for his groundbreaking work in genetics.
