Olav Ulvestad was an American chess player born on October 27, 1912, in Tacoma, Washington. He was the son of Norwegian immigrants and made a name for himself in the chess community by winning the Washington State Championship in 1934, 1952, and 1956. Ulvestad is also known for creating a variation of the Two Knights Defense, which is now recognized at high levels of play. Notably, he achieved a record of +1 -1 against David Bronstein in the USSR-USA match in Moscow in 1946.
