Octavian Bârlea was a Romanian Greek-Catholic theologian and historian, born on May 5, 1913, in Mogoș, Alba, and passed away on April 5, 2005, in Munich. He specialized in ecclesiastical history and was the brother of folklorist Ovidiu Bârlea. During the communist era, Bârlea emerged as a leader of the Romanian refugee community in Munich. In 1957, he founded the Romanian Academic Society in Rome, which he presided over as president.
