She is recognized for her photographs showcasing Chinese youth, while also creating paintings, short films, and installations. Zhang trained as an oil painter at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and later earned two master's degrees in Fine Arts and Photography from institutions in London. Since moving to New York City in 2004, she has continued her artistic practice, making annual visits to China.
