Before pivoting to country music, he attempted a career in R&B and wrote songs for notable artists like James Carr. McClinton, often called the 'Chocolate Cowboy,' gained success with his album 'The Only One,' featuring the hit single 'Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You.' He died from abdominal cancer on September 23, 1987.
