Nur Muhammad Taraki (July 15, 1917 - October 8, 1979) was an Afghan communist politician who served as president of Afghanistan from 1978 to 1979. Born near Kabul, he began his political career as a journalist and later became one of the founders of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA). His presidency was marked by controversy and a dictatorial regime, leading to governmental purgings and dissatisfaction that sparked a rebellion. Taraki was overthrown and assassinated at the behest of his rival, Hafizullah Amin, which contributed to the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan.
