He specialized in ancient Japanese poetry and earned a Doctor of Literature degree from the University of Tokyo in 1957. Shida served as an honorary professor at both Tsurumi University and Yamanashi University. His contributions to the field were recognized when he was awarded the Third Class Order of the Rising Sun.
