Nils Andreas Nygaard (1932-2015) was a prominent Norwegian jurist and one of the founders of the Faculty of Law in Bergen. Initially educated in economics, he shifted his focus to law, earning his degree in 1967. He was the first doctor of law at the University of Bergen and served as a professor from 1977-2002. Nygaard made significant contributions to tort and social security law, notably authoring the standard work 'Skade og ansvar'. He promoted Nynorsk, receiving a language prize in 2007, and had a lasting influence on generations of law students.
