Nils Johan Alfred Malmer (1928-2018) was a prominent Swedish plant ecologist known for his work on carbon cycling in boreal and Arctic peatland, especially involving Sphagnum-dominated mires. He earned his PhD in 1962 from Lund University, where he later served as a professor of plant ecology for 30 years. Malmer was also Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Oikos from 1989 to 2004 and held a position as vicedean at the Faculty of Science. He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, contributing significantly to the field of ecology.
