Nikolaus Harnoncourt was an Austrian conductor renowned for his historically informed performances of classical music. He began his musical career as a cellist and founded the period-instrument ensemble Concentus Musicus Wien in the 1950s, becoming an early pioneer of the Early Music movement. Around 1970, he started conducting operas and concerts, leading internationally recognized symphony orchestras in prestigious venues worldwide. His repertoire expanded to include composers from the 19th and 20th centuries. Harnoncourt conducted the Vienna New Year's Concert in 2001 and 2003 and authored several books on performance history and musical aesthetics.
