He obtained a Doctorate in Geological and Mineralogical Sciences and served as a professor. Lavyorov was the Vice-President of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1988 to 1991 and of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1991 to 2013. He was a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences since 1987 and a laureate of several Russian government awards. Lavyorov passed away on November 27, 2016, in Moscow.
