Newton Faller (1947-1996) was a Brazilian computer scientist and electrical engineer known for his work in data compression, particularly the discovery of adaptive Huffman codes during his tenure at IBM do Brasil. He later led the Brazilian UNIX development project at NCE/UFRJ. Faller earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley and published influential work in 1973 that contributed to the field, leading to further developments by Robert G. Gallager and Donald Knuth.
