Naomi Long Madgett was an influential American poet and publisher born on July 5, 1923. Initially a teacher, she achieved recognition for her award-winning poetry and became well-known for her contributions to African-American literature. In 1972, she founded Lotus Press, which focused on publishing works by black poets. With a legacy that earned her the title of 'the godmother of African-American poetry,' she held the position of Detroit poet laureate from 2001 until her passing on November 5, 2020.
