Born in Coburg and raised in Wagga Wagga, she worked for several newspapers including The Herald and The Age. Dexter wrote about equal pay, abortion rights, and domestic violence. As editor of The Age's 'Accent' section, she transformed women's pages, emphasizing hard news coverage. She was also The Age's travel editor until her sudden death in India. Dexter's contributions to journalism were posthumously recognized with her induction into the Victorian Media Hall of Fame.
