Nan Rendong (1945–2017) was a distinguished Chinese astronomer of Manchu descent, known for his role as the founder and Chief Scientist of China's Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST). He worked at the National Astronomical Observatory of China and held key positions within the International Astronomical Union, including Vice-President and President of divisions related to Radio Astronomy. Nan Rendong passed away from lung cancer in Boston at the age of 72. In his honor, asteroid 79694 was named after him, recognizing his significant contributions to astronomy.
