Ñāṇasatta Thera, born Martin Novosad in 1908 in Vizovice, Moravia, became a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka after moving there in 1938. He founded the Verdant Hermitage in Bandārawela in 1940 and lived there until 1982. His notable works include the English translation of the Satipatthāna Sutta and contributions to the Buddhist Encyclopaedia. He also authored a Czech textbook on Buddhism and engaged in educating lay Buddhists while regularly broadcasting on Sri Lankan radio. He passed away in Dodanduwa, and his ashes are preserved at the Island Hermitage.
