Murad Rashidovich Kaplanov was a prominent Soviet engineer born in 1915 in Vladikavkaz, known for designing the first satellite communication system in the Soviet Union. He moved to Moscow with his family in 1921 and studied at the Moscow Engineering Communication Institute and then at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, graduating with honors in 1937. Kaplanov led significant telecommunication projects for military and civilian sectors, notably the Molniya-1 and Molniya-2 satellites in 1962 and 1965, respectively, and other systems like 'Emery' in 1969 and 'Pendant' in 1973.
