Muhammadu Buhari, born on December 17, 1942, is a retired Major General of the Nigerian Army and the former leader of Nigeria's CPC. He became president on May 29, 2015, after defeating incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in the general election. Buhari previously served as the head of state from 1983 to 1985 following a military coup. Despite unsuccessful presidential bids in 2003, 2007, and 2011, he emerged as the candidate for the All Progressives Congress in December 2014. Buhari is from Daura in Katsina and has Fulani ethnic background.
