Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007) was a renowned Soviet cellist and conductor, celebrated as one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century. He was lauded for his exceptional technique and interpretations, and he significantly expanded the cello repertoire by inspiring over 100 new works from prominent composers including Shostakovich and Prokofiev. He was also a staunch advocate for human rights, receiving the International League for Human Rights Award in 1974. Rostropovich was married to soprano Galina Vishnevskaya and had two daughters, Olga and Elena.
