Often treated unfairly by Burns, his loyalty and dedication have roots in real-life corporate dynamics. His first name is inspired by puppeteer Wayland Flowers, and his ambiguous sexual orientation was developed by Sam Simon, who suggested Smithers was gay and harbored an unrequited love for Burns.
