Mikel Zarate (1933-1979) was a Basque priest and writer known for his contributions to the Basque language. After studying as a builder, he was ordained as a priest and earned a degree in Philosophy and Letters at the University of Deusto. He worked as a Basque language teacher and is best known for his only novel, 'Haurgintza muinetan,' which won the Txomin Agirre Prize in 1972. Zarate was particularly concerned with the Basque language, especially its Biscayan dialect, and criticized the artificiality of the euskara batua standard.
