Miho Shimao (October 24, 1919 - March 25, 2007) was a Japanese novelist from Kakeroma Island, part of the Amami Islands. During World War II, she met Toshio Shimao, the leader of the 18th Shinyō Special Attack Unit, whom she married post-war. She inspired the character of 'wife' in his prominent work 'The Thorn of Death.' Miho's notable works include 'Seaside Life and Death,' which won the 15th Tamura Shunko Prize in 1975, along with other pieces focusing on her homeland.
