Michaëlle Jean, born on September 6, 1957, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is a prominent figure who served as the 27th Governor General of Canada from 2005. Appointed by Queen Elizabeth II on the recommendation of Prime Minister Paul Martin, she was the first person of Afro-Caribbean descent to hold the position. Prior to her role as Governor General, she was a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and CBC. Additionally, she is known as the third woman and the second immigrant to serve in this high-ranking Canadian office.
