Educated at Radley College and Corpus Christi College, he supported the expedition's supply lines while Hillary and Norgay summited. Westmacott served in WWII with the British Indian Army Corps, built bridges in Burma, and had extensive climbing experience in the UK and overseas. After mountaineering, he worked as an economist for Shell International and held presidencies at the Alpine Club and the Climbers Club.
