Michael Vernon Townley is a former agent of Chile's secret police DINA under Augusto Pinochet. Born on December 5, 1942, in Iowa, he pleaded guilty to the 1976 murders of Orlando Letelier and Ronni Karpen Moffitt, receiving a sentence of 62 months in prison. Townley was also convicted in absentia by an Italian court for a 1975 murder attempt. He produced chemical weapons for DINA against political opponents and has maintained status as a protected witness, avoiding extradition for other crimes.
