John Michael Bazalgette Leeston-Smith was a British film and television director born on December 12, 1916. He began his career at Ealing Studios as a photographer and sound engineer. During World War II, he served in the Royal Horse Artillery. After the war, he worked at Alexandra Palace and contributed to notable BBC projects, including The Quatermass Experiment. In the 1960s, he directed episodes of Z-Cars and Doctor Who. He relocated to South Africa in 1973 to help launch SABC's television broadcasts. Leeston-Smith passed away on December 5, 2001.
