He began his career as a Royal Air Force officer and qualified as a pilot before transitioning to law, being called to the bar in both Scotland and England & Wales. His legal career spanned various roles, including Advocate Depute and Senior Partner at Simpson & Marwick. He served as a part-time Chairman of the Police Appeals Tribunal and as an Ordinary Judge of Appeal, later becoming a Senator of the College of Justice in 2012. Jones passed away suddenly in 2016.
