Mengistu Haile Mariam is an Ethiopian soldier and politician who led Ethiopia from 1977 to 1991. He was the chairman of the Derg, the socialist military junta ruling Ethiopia. His leadership marked significant political upheaval following the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie. Mengistu sought to modernize Ethiopia's economy through Marxist-Leninist policies and orchestrated violent purges, notably during the Red Terror period. His government faced numerous internal conflicts and external threats, culminating in a catastrophic famine that escalated international scrutiny before his flight to Zimbabwe in 1991.
