She was recognized for her invaluable contributions to the field of Kathak and choreography, including the 'Dance Ballet'. Maya Rao played a crucial role in popularizing the North Indian dance style 'Kathak' in South India, establishing the Naty Institute of Kathak and Choreography in Bangalore in 1987. She received several accolades like the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna in 2011.
