Max van der Stoel was a Dutch politician born on August 3, 1924, in Voorschoten. A member of the Labour Party (PvdA), he was known for his moderate leftist views and advocacy for human rights. His political career included serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs in both the Den Uyl cabinet (1973-1977) and the Van Agt II cabinet (1981-1982). He was also a UN ambassador (1983-1986) and the High Commissioner on National Minorities for the OSCE (1993-2001). A law graduate from Leiden University, he passed away on April 23, 2011, in The Hague.
