Max Ferdinand Perutz was an Austrian-British chemist born on May 19, 1914, in Vienna. He passed away on February 6, 2002, in Cambridge. In 1962, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with John Kendrew for their work on the structure of cellular proteins. In 1960, they first elucidated the three-dimensional structure of hemoglobin and myoglobin. Perutz emigrated to England in 1936 and became a professor at the University of Cambridge, where he founded the Department of Molecular Biology, which he directed until his retirement in 1979.
