Mattie Clyburn Rice was an African-American member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Born on September 15, 1922, she was recognized as a 'Real Daughter of the Confederacy' because her father was a Confederate veteran. Rice was the second African-American woman to be honored in this way and was part of a small group of women who were living daughters of Confederate veterans. She played an important role in campaigning for recognition of her father's Civil War service and that of other African-American men through a historical marker.
