In 1995, he became a professor of geology and paleontology at the University of Helsinki. His research focused on post-glacial changes in sea levels, land uplift, vegetation development, dendrochronology, and climate change. Notable works include 'The history of the Littorina Sea and associated Holocene events' (1974) and 'Jääkausien jäljillä' (1991).
