He is visually impaired and won the bronze medal in the men's 400 meters freestyle S11 event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, marking Brazil's first medal in this category. Matheus lost his sight shortly after being born prematurely. Encouraged by his father, he began swimming at the age of three and started competing in 2007, later achieving significant success in international competitions.
