Massimo Raffaello Scala was an Italian military officer, born in Milazzo on February 11, 1933, and died in Codroipo on May 3, 1961. He served as a captain in the Italian Air Force and was renowned as one of Italy's top aerobatic pilots. He was the formation leader of the 1960 reserve aerobatic team Cavallino Rampante, which was the precursor to the famous Frecce Tricolori. Scala was also appointed the first flying formation leader of the Frecce Tricolori starting March 1, 1961, at the Aerobase Rivolto in Udine.
