He began surfing at the age of 13 and turned professional in 1980, competing in the ASP World Tour. Foster was known for his goofy foot stance and reached notable milestones, including semifinals at the Offshore Pipeline Masters. He was also recognized for being the first to surf the left of Waimea Bay in heavy swells and had a reputation for deep tube rides at Backdoor.
